The unit represented here is the 13th company, 3rd battalion infantry regiment Grossdeutschland 1, which fought extensively on the Eastern Front. The soldier pictured is an unter offiziere, or NCO, and he carries the famous MP40 submachine gun and P38 pistol (still in holster). His kit includes ammo pouches and map case on the front and behind him, a mess tin canteen, bread bag and waterproof shelter.
